In order for us to find an area without clouds last night to photograph the “Christmas Star” - the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn - Whitney and I drove 100 miles west, the last 10 of which was along a dirt road leading us to McCartney Mountain outside Twin Bridges, Montana.
This was photographed in the last remaining moments of astronomical dusk, when Jupiter and Saturn were nearing the horizon. A partial moon was perfect to add some light to the snow in the area.
The night of the winter solstice also featured the “Christmas Star”, the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. One would have to go all the way back to just before dawn on March 4, 1226, to see a closer alignment between these objects visible in the night sky.
Photographed above McCartney Mountain which is located west of Twin Bridges, Montana.
